When we introduce our solar pool heating systems, we immediately disclose that we only use commercial grade high-performance PVC. This is so you know that we only provide high-quality pool heating systems that are durable, cost-efficient and guarantee long-term use.
Disadvantages of EPDM Rubber
There are other solar pool heating systems available on the market, particularly EPDM synthetic rubber. However, with our knowledge of performance and reliability, we do not use EPDM rubber due to its many disadvantages. EPDM or ethylene propylene diene monomer is a widely used artificial rubber made from ethylene and propylene. It has been used since the 1960s and has kept its popularity due to being cheaper than thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), another thermoplastic waterproof material.
While EPDM is popularly known to have weather and ozone resistance, it actually has a high rate of heat absorption, making it likely to be susceptible to premature failure and break apart; the high rate of heat absorption can cause the material to shrink or crack. The seams of EPDM roofing are the weakest point as they are not watertight, and the adhesive that holds the seams together weakens over time. Gluing the seams will be required to sustain the life of the EPDM collector, which burden homeowners with maintenance and repair costs.
The Efficiency of PVC Collectors
Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, has been used in roofing since the 1970s and has consistently proven its track record for being an efficient, durable and eco-friendly option for harnessing solar energy. PVC collectors provide cost-efficiency, durability and long years of service. PVC is cost efficient because it is made from ethylene, derived from petroleum or natural gas, and chlorine that is obtained from salt. As well as its cost-efficiency, PVC collectors deliver when it comes to high resistance to chemicals, water leaks, UV rays and heat due to the material’s cool reflective properties, and the additives mixed into the raw material. If you choose a solar pool heating system with PVC collectors, you will enjoy a service life of between 10-15 years with minimal maintenance. PVC not only saves on maintenance costs but also on energy costs, as certified by Energy Star ratings.
